Who We Are

FISHERIES, HABITAT AND COASTAL RESTORATION PROJECTS

RFRI leads the way with novel ideas, continuing to leave a legacy of leadership

The Recreational Fisheries Research Institute (RFRI) has achieved significant milestones in marine fisheries conservation and management, particularly in Louisiana. One of its notable accomplishments is the establishment of the TAG Louisiana program, a cooperative marine fish tagging initiative. Since its inception in 1985, volunteers have tagged over 300,000 fish, providing valuable data on fish movements and habitat use, which are critical for effective fisheries management.

Another key achievement is the development of the Anglers Almanac app, a tool that enables anglers to collect and report detailed catch data, including information on discards and bycatch. This app enhances data collection efforts, supporting more informed fisheries management and conservation strategies.

Additionally, RFRI has been instrumental in habitat enhancement projects, such as the creation of the 11-acre reef in Bay Ronquille. Funded by a grant from the Shell Marine Habitat Program through the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, this project aimed to restore and enhance marine habitats, contributing to the sustainability of local fisheries.

Through these initiatives, RFRI has fostered diverse partnerships and engaged anglers in data collection, education, and public involvement, leading to improved fishery data collection, habitat restoration, and the promotion of catch-and-release practices among recreational anglers.

Managing the future of fishing in Louisiana is a monumental task and in order for the RFRI to tackle fisheries, habitat, and coastal restoration projects, funding is required. To accomplish these goals in 1998, the RFRI was established as a 501(c)(3) non-profit public charity. All donations are tax deductible.
