RFRI PRESENTS DERBY DAYS

ANGLERS ALMANAC

YOUR CATCH INTO CITIZEN SCIENTIST DATA

The Anglers Almanac App will turn your phone into one of your favorite fishing tools while also turning your catch into citizen scientist data that can be utilized to modernize fish management. It comes naturally for anglers to take a quick photo of their catch. But now through the app, your catch can be identified and cataloged with the current weather conditions creating a log to be used by you and scientists to improve future fishing management & opportunities. There are many ways the Anglers Almanac can improve your fishing game and it’s as easy as snapping a picture of your latest catch of the day. This will allow anglers to participate in data collection leading to DIRECT participation in MANAGEMENT DECISIONS! See below for all new tools!!!

Anglers Almanac Features & Roadmap

Become a Citizen Scientist & Fish with a Purpose

The Anglers Almanac App will provide dockside landings data faster and more cost effective than the current State & Fed systems. It’s simple! See below for all tools active and currently being developed.

Anglers Almanac for TAG Louisiana

Taggers

You can once again use an app to enter you tagged fish! you can still manually enter via your TAG Louisiana account on the webite, but the Anglers Almanac is faster and simpler!

NOTE: You must be at the location of you catch/release to use the APP! Why?

When you record a tagged fish via the APP, it automatically records environmental conditions. These conditions can influence fish feeding, important info to anglers potentially allowing for more successful fishing trips. The App will help anglers understand why and how they caught fish. Linking capture data to atmospheric and hydrological data (i.e. salinity, water depth, air temperature, etc) during a particular trip will allow anglers to maintain personal fishing logs and allows researchers to link catch with environmental conditions. Why is this important?

Angler engagement and the ability to manage fisheries in real-time considering winds, storms, fronts and other conditions that affect anglers’ ability to get to the fish is extremely important and is currently not being collected. Matching catches to local weather conditions will give anglers more insight to their captures. It will also allow them to look at forecasted conditions and predict potential fishing success through the Apps exclusive machine learning tool. They will also be able to open a capture for more details to see environmental data matched to the date and time the capture was made and if they choose to, they can share and discuss it right in the application with fish friends. Follow the steps below & and see screen shots at the bottom of this page:

Instructions for Recording Tagged Fish via the APP:

1. You Must be a Registered Tagger with TAG Louisiana.
2. Download the Anglers Almanac App & Register (with the same login info as the TAG Louisiana site).
3. Click (New Capture).
4. Select Tag Used.
5. Tap Camera to Start.
6. Take a Photo of Tagged Fish (a site of Capture).

10. Click (SAVE CAPTURE).

For Red Snapper you will be asked 2 more questions:

2. If you choose Descending Device, it will ask at what depth (30, 60 or 90 Feet?)

TAG Louisiana (Completed)

Taggers can again enter and review tag data on their mobile devices! See above. Tagged fish can now be entered with as few as 3 “clicks”. However, it must be done real time at the location of the tagging event. After the fact tagging data entry feature will be added at a later date for now you can still do that on the mobile website TAGLOUISIANA

TAG It LA Red Snapper Tournament (Completed)

TAGitLA Tournament Anglers can also enter their catches via the App. The tournament is designed to collect information utilized in making fisheries management decisions, provide valuable scientific data, include key stakeholders, and demonstrate novel approaches to collecting data in real-time.

Fish ID (Completed)

The APP can now automatically identify over 140 fish species at a 95% accuracy level. Many Gulf of Mexico fish are relatively simple to identify (Red Drum), whereas others like snapper and grouper can be challenging, and accurate identification is critical for catch limits and quotas. If you want to participate in teaching the AI how to better ID fish go to the Fish Recognition Tab in the APP and enter fish photos. Learn more.

Fishing Analytics (Spring 2024)

Utilizing LDWF’s marine fish sampling data, new levels of insight will help anglers understand why and how they caught fish & where they are. Easy-to-read data reports & heat maps will not only provide every available environmental condition but will point anglers to areas of high sport fish concentrations or bait fish schools that attract sport fish. Data collection and analysis are integral to managing important marine fish populations.

Fishing Forecast (Summer 2024)

Fishing Forecast – Taggers using the app to record their catches will also capture atmospheric and hydrological data. This will enhance the anglers’ personal fishing logs by recording conditions that can influence fish feeding! The App will help anglers understand why and how they catch fish. Why is this important? Angler engagement and the ability to manage fisheries in real-time considering winds, storms, fronts, and other conditions that affect anglers’ ability to get to the fish is extremely important and is not currently being documented. It will also allow them to look at forecasted conditions and predict potential fishing success through the app’s exclusive machine-learning tool.

Fishing Professor (Spring 2024)

Using real-time data from Louisiana’s La Creel surveys, the Fishing Professor tells you what kinds of fish were caught, where, and when. Users can limit their search to specific types of fish and can even home in on precise fishing areas and marinas where fish were caught or landed. When planning for a trip a week or two away the Fishing Professor can help make fishing trip decisions and increase the odds of catching a targeted species. This data is essential for developing accurate fishery assessments and for evaluating the effectiveness of state and federal fishery management policies.
