Rio Grande Cichlid

Rio Grande cichlids are dark colored fish with white and blue spots. They are comparable in size to Louisiana’s native bluegill. Males often have large foreheads that make them easily distinguishable from native species. They are popular in the pet trade and have become established in certain areas as a result of ‘aquarium dumping.’ Rio Grande cichlids are territorial and compete with native fishes for spawning substrate and food.
