Snowy Grouper

This grouper has a brownish colored body and a black edge running the top of dorsal fin. The mid-region of these grouper is broad, similar to a warsaw grouper.  Snowy grouper can be confused with young warsaw grouper, but the warsaw grouper has speckles of white, whereas the snowy grouper has distinct white spots.

Snowy grouper are found offshore on deepwater reefs, rocks, wrecks or structures in the Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico.  They can be caught around the base of the deeper oilrigs.

They are commonly caught by deep dropping cut baits to the bottom in deep water over structure.  Jigs will also take fish if you can get them in the zone.  They are commonly caught in 200 to 600 feet of water; however, juveniles can be caught in shallower water.
