Softshell turtles are recognized by their flat profile and leathery shell. Their long necks allow them to reach the surface of the water while the rest of their body is submerged. Unlike other aquatic turtles, softshell turtles can breathe through the skin that lines their throat and neck, which allows them to remain underwater for extended periods of time. Softshell turtles are quite fast and mostly eat invertebrates and small animals such as fish, mammals, and amphibians.
