Southern Flounder

A very common, yet unique fish, flounder are completely flat, with dark brown top side with white spots and a white underside. Both eyes are on the topside of the fish. Flounder have strong jaws with teeth for gripping prey.  They lie on the bottom and wait for prey to swim overhead. They are an aggressive predator and will chase down prey for short distances.

Normally flounder are found in both estuaries and shallow offshore waters, but they can even venture into freshwater systems at times.

Flounder can be caught on lures and live bait by fishing near the bottom.  Live finger mullet and small killifish are excellent baits for flounder.  Anglers successfully target flounder around inshore structures such as tidal creek mouths, oyster reefs and inshore structures.
